What The Third Chair stores, how it's kept within your couple space, and what isn't built yet.

Last updated June 2026 · Private-testing draft

The Third Chair is in private testing. This page is written in plain language for testers and is not a final, attorney-reviewed legal document. It may change as the product develops.

What may be stored

To make the app work, The Third Chair may store the following inside your private couple space:

  • account and profile information (such as your email and display name);
  • your couple-space membership (who is in the space);
  • invitations you create or accept;
  • conversation transcripts you record, paste, or upload;
  • audio recordings, if you choose to upload them;
  • consent records (who agreed to analyze which conversation);
  • clarity reports generated for a conversation;
  • your private reflections.

Private reflections are yours alone

Your private reflections are author-only. They are visible only to you — they are not shared with your partner, and they are not included in any clarity report.

Couple-space access and archived history

A couple space is shared by two partners. If the space owner removes a partner:

  • the removed partner loses access to the couple space and its conversations;
  • the owner may keep prior shared conversations, reports, and audio as a closed, read-only archive (preserved, but no longer editable or re-analyzed);
  • a replacement partner does not get access to that prior archived history — a new partner starts fresh.

A removed partner's own private reflections remain private to them; removal does not share them with anyone.

Email notifications

When email is configured, The Third Chair may send transactional email through a third-party email provider — for example, an invitation to a partner, or a notice to a removed partner that their access ended. These emails contain only what's needed for that purpose and never include your transcripts, reports, audio, or private reflections.

AI and transcription providers

To turn a recording into text and to generate a clarity report, the relevant audio or transcript is sent from our servers to third-party AI and transcription providers for processing. This happens server-side; your audio is not sent from provider to provider beyond what's needed to produce the transcript and report.

Export and deletion (not yet built)

Data export and deletion are not fully implemented yet. When they are, they will use a deliberate, privacy-safe flow that handles shared conversations carefully for both partners. Until then, please don't assume one-click export or deletion is available — if you need data removed during testing, contact the person who invited you.

A note on scope

This page describes what the app does today during private testing. We would rather under-promise than overclaim: it is not a complete data- processing agreement, and it may change as the product develops. See also our Terms and Safety pages.
